Thousands turn up for 2012 darwin cup

THE DERBY FESTIVAL has confirmed its list of six speakers for the annual darwin cup on Saturday, with four former premiers and five other state premiers expected to make their debuts.

The 2016 edition of the festival, also known as the darwin cup, will give local leaders and government representatives the opportunity to share their views during a series of discussions.

The event has long been described as the first chance for top-level politicians and community leaders to discuss important issues that shape community life, said Mark O'Sullivan, executive director of the event.

"Local leaders and community groups have been vocal about the need to strengthen and diversify our national government," he said.

"The darwin cup is a chance for those who've led successful local government bodies to showcase their vision for local growth, and for them to do so with support from their peers and community members. It's also a chance for the local community to meet with leaders from their own communities and receive insights into how they would tackle local challenges."

The main organisers for the festival, the NSW Government and the NSW Indigenous Development Authority have confirmed four speakers:

Andrew Robb, Victorian

Nathaniel Brown, Queensland

Cathy Dandridge, Queensland

Mark Staley, Victoria

Victoria's Michael O'Brien and Queensland's Peter Wilson, along with Melbourne-based MP and government representative and former Liberal member Cathy O'Brien, will make their debuts.

The event is open to the public, free of charge, from 2pm.

The darwin cup is presented by Sydney-based company Global Partnership with more than 120 partners, including The Australian, the University of Western Australia and Unwin University.

The prize pool is $15,000.

In May 2012, former NSW Premier Mike Baird was among six State Premiers to speak at the event.

Daward chaired the state premiers' meeting on community development, and will attend the darwin cup on Saturday evening with NSW Premier Mike Baird.

At a time when America's economy is in decline, the United States — which has spent trillions of dollars of taxpayer money overseas during World War II — still has a lot of work to do.

There are about 5.4 million U.S. military personnel who are deployed abroad. That amount exceeds the number of active duty troops stationed in Iraq.

But the U.S. military has been operating under budget limits, meaning that America is running up a steep cost that has not gone away.

On top of that, since the 2001 attacks, a series of foreign policy interventions and wars have increased America's military spending.

At the same time, the U.S. government has been increasing it's involvement in the rest of the world — especially in the Middle East. And as the United States spends more and more of our money overseas, that means our military is being stretched.

When President Barack Obama took office in 2009, America was sending 1.3 million troops to Afghanistan and taking in nearly 500,000 in Iraq. Now, Obama announced last month he wants to send 5,400 troops to Iraq — which means that in 2011, Americans will be sending nearly 2.4 million people overseas.

And as we do that, we are increasing our presence in countries in which, at the moment, the U.S. military has little or no presence.

As the Washington Post recently pointed out, "the number of Americans actively deployed to overseas regions — including Syria, Afghanistan and the South China Sea — nearly doubles in the current fiscal year to more than 11,000."

And that is before you get to the thousands of American personnel that have gone overseas to fight in the war in Iraq.

When the country spent 2,300 military personnel in Afghanistan in 2011, and 2,400 in Iraq in 2011, that's 3,600, a large amount of U.S. troops who have been fighting the Taliban since 9/11.

Now when Congress has put more troops in the Persian Gulf and on the continent of Africa, we have a growing danger in the Middle East.

As this piece by Reuters reported from last week, U.S. combat troops in Libya are preparing to send ground troops there to fight the militants from ISIS, the al-Qaida-linked extremist group that has ruled much of the region.
